I suppose it all started when, as a little lad, my father encouraged me to draw. Then, a little later, my form master suggested that I might like to start evening classes to do commercial art. Well of course, any kind of art was fine by me. This was in 1934 and I was twelve years old. In 1936, I was offered a place in Vittoria Street Art College in my hometown of Birmingham. In the event, I didn’t go. It was felt that a career in art was unlikely to bring home the bacon so I got a job in an Engineering Stores not far from where we lived. Then the 2nd World War broke out and I volunteered for the Royal Navy. This turned out to be a good move for me, but I didn’t do much art. However, after it was over I soon started painting in earnest.
